Mississippi State University’s National Security Research Organization provides capabilities that support key national security priorities.
What We Do
The team of researchers conducts studies for business and government, using the best and brightest minds in academia to provide solutions to the country's problems. We bring together academic expertise across multiple disciplines to design, develop, and deliver solutions for partners in business and government.
Who We Serve
Clients of the National Security Research Organization include state federal government agencies that are integral to our country’s security and businesses that support these efforts.
Department of Defense
MSU researchers support a wide range of defense priorities, including advanced materials, autonomous systems, intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), industrial base sustainment, cybersecurity, human performance, supercomputing and more.
Homeland Security
MSU has several partnerships with the Department of Homeland Security, including leadership of the DHS UAS Demonstration Range. MSU resources in high-performance computing, cybersecurity, advanced materials and remote sensing, among other areas, enhance outcomes for projects related to homeland security.
NOAA (climate security)
MSU has a long-standing history with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that includes projects to improve climate modeling and flood forecasting. NOAA has invested in supercomputing resources at MSU, including two systems, Orion and Hercules, that are both among the world’s most powerful systems. MSU also leads the Northern Gulf Institute, a NOAA cooperative institute.
USDA (food security)
MSU is a national leader in agriculture research and development, making significant contributions to the food security of our nation and our world. MSU is pioneering new autonomous agriculture technologies and techniques, developing climate-resilient food systems, fostering efficient land and water resource management, and conducting outreach to promote agricultural sustainability in strategic regions of the world.
FAA
MSU is working to safely and securely integrate UAS into the national airspace. We are the leader of the FAA’s National Center of Excellence for UAS Research, known as the Alliance for Systems Safety of UAS through Research Excellence. MSU’s Raspet Flight Research Lab is designated as the FAA’s UAS Safety Research Facility, placing MSU at the helm of studying and developing UAS safety and certification standards.
Private Industry
MSU has several partnerships with leading defense-focused companies that specialize in everything from aerospace to artificial intelligence. Defense companies also heavily recruit our graduates to support their workforce needs.
